You did not mention the Nikon D300, which is comparable in price to the Canon 40D. I think they are also comparable in every other way. I have had very good luck with the Nikon D300 with the option of 51 focus points and 3D tracking. I have found it to be very good with fast-moving objects (in my case, flying birds) and with scenics as well. You might want to take a peek at the D300 while you are shopping.

Have fun and enjoy the purchase!

Well, you have narrowed yourself down to some very good cameras and any of these would serve you well if you are really a techie. It sounds as if perhaps you're asking for an opinion here so I will naturally be happy to give you mine.
First of all I am a working professional photographer and have owned my own studio for over 40 years. In my studio I use the EOS 5D Canon and of course I love it. But now that I have turned 70 it is a bit of a heavyweight to just carry around for casual and vacation pictures. Anyway last year as a tie I bought myself a Canon XSi. I bought the camera with the 18 to 55mm lens and then immediately added the Canon EFS 10 to 22 mm lens and the EFS 55 to 250 mm lens. This is a great package particularly for me. The normal lens is an outstanding picture taker and 10 to 22 is one of the most superb wide-angle lenses and are used. The 55 to 250 mm lens rounds the package out very nicely. It all fits in a small camera bag and is quite small and portable. As to picture taking, the pictures are almost as good as I take with my 5D and the three lenses cover every situation I have taken pictures under one I have been traveling or hiking to enjoy nature and photography. As a professional use to full frame digital SLR cameras, that's high praise for a small format camera. If I were doing it all over again I would do it exactly the same way.
That package will be a little over $1200, but not too far over and once you've got it you'll find there are a lot of pictures you can take with it.
Hope this helps.
References :
D5Canon

You might end up spending all that money and not have much left over for glass...

Both brands are fine. you mentioned the LCD and live view.

Only the 50d and D90 have true high res LCDs, there are so many pixels packed into such a small space... well, your eye can hardly make out the pixels, very smooth.

Live view on Nikon and Canon isn't the best. If live view is a must have, must work smoothly kind of thing, you want to go Sony Alpha, A300 or A350. If you don't mind the clunky, slow live view of Canon or Nikon, then scratch Sony off the list.

If you are serious about photography, dump the entry level stuff off the list. The D80 is good, just a tad old. It's not really old, but dSLR bodies come and go so fast.

So I've boiled down the list to the 40d great all around camera with a low res LCD. 50d with a proper LCD but it took a small hit in picture quality (at high ISO) pixel count went up, but sensor size is the same, gapless micro lenses or not.

And finally the D90. I'm taking the D90 if I don't need killer live view and the tilting LCD of the Alphas. Also, they didn't go crazy on the pixel count, they kept it at 12MP.

Well any of these cameras will be fine. You have told us a lot about who you are, but not about what you want to shoot. The Canon XSi, or Nikon D80 will be good for not very demanding situations, more snapshots, landscapes, macro work. Not so much sports, really low light situations. The Canon 40D is the best action sports camera there with almost twice the fps of any other camera on that list. Its also bigger and more rugged. The D90 has very good high ISO performance and will be good for really low light stuff, like concerts and such. Given your budget though I might get the XSi or D80 and an 18-200mm IS or VR lens depending on brand. The I might also pick up a good low light prime like the 50mm f/1.8 or 1.4 or maybe a little wider.
References :
Canon and Nikon are both very good choices for SLR photo systems.

You can compare the image quality of the sensors at:
http://www.dxomark.com

Budget for:
1) Camera body
2) Lens(es) for the type(s) of shooting you want to do
3) Memory card
4) Carrying bag/pouch with room to grow

5) A tripod if you plan to do landscape, macro close-ups, night shots, or panoramas

6) A polariser filter if you plan to do many outdoor shots under bright sunlight

Lenses:
You will want something wider than 17mm focal length for shooting landscapes and architecture. I suggest the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. It is available for both Nikon and Canon (but it is a different incompatible mount for each, so make sure it has the correct mount).

For macro photography, you will need a macro lens. For Canon, I suggest the EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro. This will give you great detail when shooting small items up close. You can achieve very clear, crisp textures. For Nikon, I would look for any Macro lens capable of 1:1 magnification or better, with a focal length 100mm or longer.

The Canon 450D is a great entry level SLR camera; but if you plan to shoot any low-light or very fast action where you do not want motion blur, it only offers ISO 1600 maximum. Usually to get the best image quality, you would avoid shooting higher than ISO 400; but in order to get a shot without motion blur, you sometimes must venture higher.

The Nikon D90 with the 18-200 VR lens is a very difficult value to beat. That lens will cover more than 95% of your focal length needs. That combination is a very versatile configuration.

I would not look at the Nikon D80, and I would consider the Canon 50D over the 40D.

Good luck!
References :
Help! what is a good first dslr camera for a tech saavy person?
Hello, I am looking to get my first dslr camera. I am very good with electronics and I can usually figure out things. I am the kind of person who takes a week to read the entire manual book and understand the item inside and out and then use it. I have no experience with DSLR's but I am sure with a lot of reading I can take full advantage of it's capabilities.

I have narrowed down the brands to Canon and Nikon. I want it to have an auto mode as well so I can start using it soon and then take care of the manual adjustments later as I learn more. I am looking for a camera with a 3 inch LCD screen at least, and it has to have live view. A sturdy body is also preferred. I also own a macintosh so I would like the software to be compatible with both mac's and windows. Price isn't much of an issue, i'm looking to spend anywhere from $600 -$1200. I want something that has a complete kit, not just the body.

Here are some ones i'm looking at, if one of these is best for my circumstances feel free to let me know
Canon 40D
Canon 450D / Rebel XSi
Nikon D90 (the video capture is definitely a plus!)
Nikon D80

Any other suggestions are welcome thanks!
More info on what I want to shoot. I would be interested in shooting macro pictures, fast motion pictures, and spontaneous shots, and of course just normal casual picture taking at the park etc.
